About Cairndow
Cairndow is a small village in southwest Scotland that lies between the A83 road and the head of Loch Fyne, a popular area for diving and fishing. Originally associated with an inn, Cairndow has significantly developed with the creation of the Clachan Hydroelectric scheme. Today, the village is noted for oyster farming and for the gardens of Ardkinglas.
Administratively, Cairndow forms part of the Argyll and Bute council area, which covers the second largest administrative area of any Scottish council, featuring islands and over 3000 miles of coastline. The council area adjoins those of Highland, Perth and Kinross, Stirling and West Dunbartonshire and its border runs through Loch Lomond.
Cairndow's historical features include the Stagecoach Inn, which is one of the oldest coaching inns in Scotland, believed to be the place where Queen Victoria is said to have changed horses, in 1875, and the octagonal shaped Kilmorich Parish Church, built in 1820, situated at the south end of the village.
